La mente humana y Dios

La mente humana, no importa lo bien entrenada que esté, es incapaz de abordar el universo. Somos como un niño pequeño que entra en una biblioteca enorme cuyas paredes están forradas hasta el techo de libros en muchas lenguas diversas. El niño sabe que alquien ha debido de escribir esos libros, pero no sabe ni quién ni cómo. No entiende los idiomas en que están escritos. El niño percibe un plan definitivo en la disposición de los libros, un orden misterioso, que no comprende, sino que muy vagamente sospecha. Me parece a mí que ésta es la actitud de la mente humana, incluso la más grande y más culta, hacia Dios. Vemos un universo magníficamente dispuesto, que obedece ciertas leyes, pero comprendemos esas leyes muy vagamente. Nuestra mente limitada no es capaz de abarcar la fuerza misteriosa que mueve las constelaciones.

The Human Mind & God

The human mind, no matter how highly trained, cannot grasp the universe. We are in the position of a little child, entering a huge library whose walls are covered to the ceiling with books in many different tongues. The child knows that someone must have written those books. It does not know who or how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child notes a definite plan in the arrangement of the books, a mysterious order, which it does not comprehend, but only dimly suspects. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of the human mind, even the greatest and most cultured, toward God. We see a universe marvellously arranged, obeying certain laws, but we understand the laws only dimly. Our limited minds cannot grasp the mysterious force that sways the constellations.
